English at Dallam
At Dallam Community Primary School, we believe that English and communication are key life skills. Through the English curriculum, we help children develop the skills and knowledge that will enable them to communicate effectively and creatively through spoken and written language and equip them with the skills to become lifelong learners. We want children to enjoy and appreciate literature and its rich variety.
We follow the National Curriculum for English. Each year, the children cover a range of text types and wherever possible, opportunities for application of these skills to be applied across the curriculum are carefully planned.

Throughout both key stages, we follow the ‘Talk for Writing’ approach for teaching English. High quality texts are chosen to inspire and motivate our children, exciting and inspiring ‘hooks’ into the text are created by our teachers and clear and purposeful outcomes are planned for each unit.
Reading
We provide our children with a wide range of texts for reading, both in school and at home. Guided reading is delivered using a range of quality texts such as Project-X and Rigby Star. We have recently invested in a new school library, which provides an extensive range of books to promote and foster a love of reading across the school. This includes quality non-fiction texts to support learning across the new curriculum. In key stage 1, we use the highly successful Read Write Inc phonics programme to teach phonics. Here the children learn how to read the sounds in letters and words and how those sounds can be written down. For more information please click below.
Spelling
In key stage 2, teachers follow the Liverpool Schools Alliance programme for teaching spelling, which uses the National Curriculum expectations for spelling in each year group and the statutory word lists.
